A day in Selçuk

A day in Selçuk from Kuşadası.

Selçuk deserves a plan of its own. Efes Museum is in the town, while the ancient city of Ephesus is a separate destination. Start with the museum, then choose between the streets around İsa Bey Mosque and the outdoor ruins on Ayasuluk Hill.

Kuşadası harbour.

What belongs in a Selçuk day trip?

Build the day around Efes Museum and one town walk. In dry weather, add İsa Bey Mosque and St John's Basilica. If Ephesus or Şirince is the main reason for your trip, choose one of those as the second destination and leave the rest for another day.

Separate the places before planning the route

Similar names do not mean the same entrance, ticket or opening hours.

Arrive at the museum, not an Ephesus gate

Use Efes Müzesi as your destination. The official address is Atatürk Mahallesi, Uğur Mumcu Sevgi Yolu No. 26 in Selçuk. The museum map below points to the location supplied by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

If you are arranging a car or taxi, name the museum explicitly. For public transport, confirm the current Kuşadası to Selçuk departure point and your return service before leaving. A journey to Selçuk does not automatically take you to an entrance of the ancient city.

Make time for the museum collection

The museum brings together finds from Ephesus. The Artemis statues are a reason to come here even if you have already walked through the ancient city. Seeing objects at close range gives a different kind of visit from moving between buildings outdoors.

The official page checked on 2 October 2026 lists daily opening from 08:30 to 17:30, with the ticket office closing at 17:00. These are museum hours. Recheck them for your travel date, particularly if you are planning a late arrival.

Choose a town walk below Ayasuluk Hill

İsa Bey Mosque stands between the Temple of Artemis area and St John's Basilica, below the southwest side of Ayasuluk Hill. Use it as a named stop when planning your walk from the museum. Respect worship and follow the guidance at the entrance.

The town walk can be enough after the museum. You do not need to climb to the castle to make the trip worthwhile. If the weather turns, keep the outdoor stops short and return to the centre for your onward journey.

Treat the basilica and castle as outdoor visits

St John's Basilica occupies part of Ayasuluk Hill, with the castle farther up. The ruins add an outdoor walk to the day. Wear shoes that work on uneven ground and decide whether the hill suits everyone before adding both stops.

On 2 October 2026, the basilica's official page listed 08:00 to 18:00, with its ticket office closing at 17:30. The castle has a separate, earlier visiting cutoff. Its official page shows different closing information in the table and the description, so ask at the entrance before leaving the castle until late afternoon.

Choose one extra destination

Museum and town is a complete plan. If you also want Ephesus, settle the ancient city's entrance and return transport first. If you prefer Şirince, keep the village as your other destination and check the onward and return journey before committing to it.

A useful order is museum, a break in Selçuk, then the outdoor stop you care about most. This is a suggested sequence, not a timed itinerary. It leaves room to shorten the day without losing the visit you came for.

Questions about the visit

Is Efes Museum inside Ephesus?

No. Efes Museum is in Selçuk town. The Ephesus archaeological site is a separate destination, so use the museum's name and location when arranging transport.

Can I visit Selçuk on a rainy day?

Yes, with the museum as the main stop. The basilica, castle and walks between town sights include outdoor areas. Add those according to the weather.

Do the museum, basilica and castle close at the same time?

No. They have separate published visitor information. The castle has an earlier cutoff, and the ticket offices at the museum and basilica close before the sites themselves.
